How to make wood pellets by portable pellet mill ?
Pellet production principle:
Wood pellets
1.accessible and suitable raw materials for pelletizing. Dead leaves, sawdust, straw or dry grass around your home or farm for biomass pellet making; maize or corn and etc. for feed pellet production. Note: If materials are large blocks such as wood chips, twigs or branches, they need to be crushed by a crusher or hammer mill before pelletizing.
2.Adjust the moisture content of raw materials. The best moisture content for making biomass pellet is 12%-15%. For feed pellet, raw material moisture should be between 13%-18%. You can dry raw materials in the sun to get suitable water content. If there are too much moisture, a dryer is needed to decrease its moisture content. Otherwise the biomass will block pellet die holes and cause low forming rate.
3.Feed materials into the homemade pellet mill. By the compression between the flat die and rollers, raw materials squeeze through holes on the pellet die. Then final pellets will fall out of the pellet mill.
4.Leave pellets to cool naturally and then pack them in bags for storage.
Attention on rollers and flat die
Flat die and rollers
For flat die pellet mill, the most significant parts are rollers and die which are responsible for compressing raw materials into pellets. So they must be anti-bearable and not easy to be broken to keep machine in stable operation. Our rollers and flat dies offered are made of precise material of alloy metal. Flat dies are with different hole sizes for your choice. Customized pellet die is also available.
Due to the abrasive nature and pressure of compression, rollers and flat die are consumable parts. Many buyers are very concerned about the service life of flat die and rollers. Actually the lifespan depends on how often you use it and what kind of biomass you pelletize. Take the sawdust pelletizing for example, constant usage of 4-8 hours a day for over 6 months will wear down the die and rollers. You need to replace them. If the pelletized materials are softer biomass like grasses, leaves, the die and rollers can last over one year.
It is also noteworthy that the thickness of flat die will affect the quality of pellets. When the die is thicker, the pelletizing process is longer, so the density of pellets will be higher, and the appearance of pellets will be smoother. And the life of the die will be longer.
